Rachel Goodrich is The G.O.A.T. (Greatest of All Time). I saw her last Friday at The Stage in the design district and I was blown away by her music, her performance and her band. Rachel is an incredible songwriter and a super talented singer and guitarist. This Miami musician recently moved to the west coast where she has been making it happen, getting featured on Vouge and E! Her show at The Stage was her return to Miami and the venue was packed with all of her local fans, eager to get some of her singer songwriter goodness.

I’m not going to lie- I was skeptical before the show. As a local artist, Rachel Goodrich has a lot of hype, but there’s something about kazoos and ukuleles that doesn’t make me want to go out on a Friday night. Needles to say, I was wrong- the show was AMAZING. Rachel and her band are super tight and pretty rocking, and all three of them looked like they are genuinely having a great time on stage. Rachel is somehow sassy and a goofball at the same time and she is super entertaining when she performs and speaks to the audience. Her songwriting is sincere and simple and when you listen to her music, nothing seems forced. Her lyrics seem to have come out carelessly and without too much effort, but there is nothing careless about this quirk star- she takes her craft seriously and she works hard. My favorite songs of the night were “Morning Light,” “Monster Mash” and the hilarious “Dope Song.” The crowd went nuts for Rachel and her band and she was followed by the awesome cumbia/pop/hiphop band Locos Por Juana, who I tried to photograph unsuccessfully (the singer never stops dancing! He NEVER stops!!).

I left The Stage (drunk) after an amazing night and when I woke up the next morning, I bought the two awesome Rachel Goodrich albums available on itunes- The wacky and fun “Tinker Toys” and her new, more edgy self titled release, which I am listening to as I write. Basically, I am now a hardcore Rachel Goodrich fan and I think the world would be a happier place if everyone else was too. Go buy her albums! Go see her shows! NOW!

This weekend, I went to Cat Cay in the Bahamas to play a party with my favorite wedding/corporate band Higher Ground and needless to say, we had an AMAZING time. The trip started with the scariest flight ever in what I can only describe as a tiny, flimsy, old death plane- the controls were all analog and the gas tank kept going down to empty and the pilot would flick it with his fingers to get it back up to full….sketch. There were 12 people in the band, so we took two planes for the band members and one plane for the gear- they literally weighed all of us at the airport before we left to make sure these little planes could handle us. We landed safe and sound in the shortest landing strip I’ve ever seen and had the bus driver, Justin, take us to our dorm rooms. Cat Cay is a small island with a private country club and we had strict instructions that we weren’t allowed to go in the beach, the pool or eat at the restaurants. In other words, we had to be invisible. We had no other option but to hang out in front of our rooms, watching the gigantic turkeys, chickens and one lonely duck walking around the field ahead of us. We waited patiently for the band meal, which to our surprise consisted of Caribbean rice and beans and ribs- NO BANDWISHES! YES!

Then it was time to work. We headed over to the party, where our stage was set up with a beautiful waterfront view. The reception was short and fun and we took a long break during which a Junkanoo band rocked out and we saw an awesome 15 minute firework show dedicated to the newlyweds. Then it was time to drink- we were invited to stay at the party (so much for being invisible) and after shutting it down, we all piled on the back of a golf cart with a flat tire and headed to a local bar where the staff goes to party when they’re done with work. There we danced, drank Kalik and Jose Cuervo and proceeded to get completely shwasted. The rest of the night is a blur, but I know that at some point, the bass player and I let some random, but very generous, club employee take us through the jungle in his golf cart (or at least it seemed like the jungle in my drunken state) to his house, where he grilled up some hamburgers- Island hospitality for sure. At some point I stumbled back to my room and set alarm that rang at 6 pm the next day when I was already back in Miami. Thankfully, my friend who I was rooming with woke me up and I made it to the plane on time, after making the walk of shame to recover my gear that I carelessly left at the party. On the flight back, I got to ride in the front seat with the pilot and he even let me wear headphones and talk into the mic. The only downside was that the whole plane ride home, I felt like I was gonna throw up everywhere.

After a sausage, egg and chee biscuit from Mc Donald’s and a few hours of sleep, my hungover wore off and all I was left with were good memories of an awesome trip with some of my closest friends. Fun gig, good partying and oh yea, I can’t wait to get that paycheck :)

Brunch at Sustain

Theres nothing better than drinking on a Sunday morning and brunch is the perfect situation to make that happen. Last Sunday i went to Sustain in Midtown for l Brunch. Thanks to a Guilt City coupon, we ate and drank like kings at this awesome, yet pricey restaurant. We started with a round of bloody marys that came garnished with those funny olives that have a pickle stuffed inside them and we followed with a round of berry mimosas- yum! While we drank and waited for our food we rocked out to the sick music they were playing at the restaurant, everything from The Black Keys to Radiohead. The food was amazing: sin-a-buns, fruit and thyme salad, challah french toasts with apple compote, smoked salmon eggs benedict and my favorite two dishes, fried eggs with hash and wet fries. The hash was well seasoned and prepared with peppers and once in a while you would be lucky enough to score a bite with chopped pancetta in it mmmmmm. The best part of the breakfast though, were the wet fries. These fries were smothered in bone marrow gravy and, when dipped in the house habanero sauce, they were completely out of this world. My only complaint was that the side of bacon only came with three pieces- weak. After all that food, we finished with another round of berry mimosas an racked up quite a bill. It was a wonderfull afternoon and while we were eating our late breakfast and grooving to The Killers we came to the conclusion that good food makes you dance. Thanks for the good food Sustain.
